HPO Outreach

HIPAA Heroes and Compliance Champions Programs

The HIPAA Program Office (HPO) and The Office of Medical Center Compliance (OMCC) engage in a wide range of outreach initiatives that are designed to maintain visibility of the HIPAA Privacy and Security principles and UCMC’s Health Care Integrity Program among the workforce. The goal of these initiatives is to educate UCMC faculty and staff on a variety of compliance issues with the purpose of “Turning Awareness Into Action.”

With this in mind, the HPO and OMCC have established programs to recognize individuals who demonstrate leadership, integrity, and initiative by making a “good catch,” taking a stand, preventing an incident or simply seeking clarification on billing, coding, documentation and HIPAA privacy and security matters. These programs, HIPAA Heroes and Compliance Champions, are designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate the principles of good business conduct that are outlined in the Medical Center’s Health Care Integrity Program and in the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. These individuals are recognized for going above and beyond the duty to comply with healthcare laws, regulations, and rules that are applicable to his or her job responsibilities.

UCMC faculty and staff can nominate individuals as HIPAA Heroes and Compliance Champions by completing a HIPAA Hero Nomination Form or Compliance Champion Nomination Form and placing the completed form in one of the ballot boxes located outside the HPO (L-147) or in the main hallway outside the Compliance Office (S-08). Completed forms can also be faxed to the HPO (2-6278) or the Compliance Office (4-3356).

Each month, HPO and OMCC will select individuals as HIPAA Heroes and Compliance Champions and recognize them for their service to the Medical Center and their “commitment to compliance.” The ultimate goal of these programs is to prevent, detect, and correct problems before it is too late. All faculty and staff are encouraged to do the right thing and strive to become HIPAA Heroes and Compliance Champions.
