HIPAA TIPS OF THE WEEK
3.31.08 TIP OF THE WEEK
What should I do if I need access to the PHI of someone I know and the reason for the access is not related to my job?
You must be designated as a "Personal Representative"
(Policy 05-30)
for a patient to request access to that patient's medical information
and
you must contact the physician or submit a formal request to Health Information Management (medical records) to gain access. Employees must not use their employee status to obtain medical information for anyone else. Employees who violate these guidelines will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination, in accordance with the applicable UCMC, BSD, Medical Staff, or University policies.
